AFL FIRST AID PROVIDERS & MEDICAL STANDARDS

AFL First aid providers provide immediate treatment of medical issues arising while playing football. Their focus is the health and safety of the player, and everyone should support their efforts.

Section 15 of the National Community Football Policy Handbook outlines the minimum requirements at each Match and Training session:

  1. Obtained a nationally accredited first aid and CPR qualification which is current and up-to-date and includes assessed competencies HLTAID011 (Provide First Aid) and HLTAID009 (Provide Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation); and
  2. Has completed the AFL First Aid and Concussion Management online module within the previous 24 months. 

  1. Is a qualified and AHPRA registered medical practitioner, paramedic, physiotherapist, or nurse with appropriate first aid competencies (including or equivalent to HLTAID011 (Provide First Aid) and HLTAID009 (Provide Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation)); and
  2. Has completed the AFL First Aid and Concussion Management online module within the previous 24 months.

Someone who has completed a Controlling Body approved Level 1 or Level 2 Sports Trainer course and who has completed the AFL First Aid and Concussion Management online module within the previous 24 months also meets the minimum standards.  That additional level of training as a Level 1 or Level 2 Sports Trainer (which includes HLTAID011 (Provide First Aid) and HLTAID009 (Provide Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation) as a prerequisite is recommended over and above an AFL First Aider.

All AFL First Aid Providers must also hold a working with children check (or equivalent) or otherwise meet the working with children requirements in their State or Territory.

To register as an AFL First Aid Provider, a person must complete registration on PlayHQ.

To support player safety and welfare, the following must also be in place at all matches and training sessions:

  • At least one AFL First Aid Provider with appropriate minimum qualifications in attendance
  • A first aid kit and adequate sport-specific rescue/transport equipment (e.g. stretcher)
  • Clearly marked venue access for emergency vehicles
