NUTRITION & SUPPLEMENTS
NUTRITION
Sports nutrition plays an important role in helping athletes train effectively and compete at their best. While individual dietary needs may arise from medical conditions (such as coeliac disease or food allergies) or personal choices (such as vegan, vegetarian or pescatarian diet), no dietary approach is, of itself, incompatible with high-level athletic performance.
Athletes with specific dietary requirements are encouraged to seek guidance from a qualified sports dietitian to ensure they’re meeting their fueling needs safely and effectively - so they can perform at their peak.
SUPPLEMENTS IN SPORT – FOOD FIRST APPROACH
The global sports supplement industry is worth billions, yet many of its claims lack solid scientific backing. Unlike pharmaceuticals, supplements are not subject to the same rigorous manufacturing standards - raising real concerns about contamination, mislabeling, and inaccurate dosing.
For athletes, the stakes are even higher. Using supplements without proper guidance can lead to serious health risks and potential anti-doping violations. Any supplement use should be based on medical advice and aligned with anti-doping regulations.
National Sporting Organisations around the world, including those supporting elite athletes, recommend a “food first” approach to nutrition. Whole, minimally processed, foods and drinks should form the foundation of an athlete’s diet, providing the necessary fuel for performance without the added cost or risk associated with supplements.
