Coach Tackling Curriculum

The Tackle Curriculum has been developed to equip coaches with the tools to teach safe & effective tackling. It enhances player safety, boosts skill development and fosters a positive learning environment.

Section 1

Simon Says (U8s - U10s)

Simon says is an activity that can start with no contact for U8s before adding in variations for U9s and U10s that progressively add in a wrap tackle and more challenging constraints. Activities like Simon Says are suitable for young players to develop some essential skills for learning how to tackle and compete to gain possession of the ball.

Wrap Tackle Walk Through (U9s)

The Wrap Tackle Walk through is a great way to introduce tackling for the first time. It allows players to practice their technique at a low intensity & impact before progressively making the activity more challenging.

Super Hug (U9s & U10s)

Super Hug is a great activity to activate players’ upper bodies and get them used to close contact. For players new to the game, this can be used as a contact introduction activity.

Farmer and the Sheep (U10s)

Farmer and the Sheep provides opportunities for players to develop their evading and tackling skills.

Quick Release (U10s)

A fun activity where players are required to react quickly to attack or defend.
Section 6

Tackle Pairs (U11+)

Introduce Tackle Pairs at a low intensity to allow players to get low and balanced to lay an effective tackle.

Tackle grids (U11+)

This activity provides players with repeated opportunities to tackle and be tackled.

Tackle Gates (U11+)

Tackle Gates gives players lots of repetitions to practice tackling and apply defensive skills.

Circle Drill (U11+)

Circle Drill is an activity that can involve 8-10 players and multiple players at a time.
