Mates on the Mark

Football is more than just a game, it’s a community built on leadership, respect, and inclusivity. Mates On The Mark is an AFL initiative, hosted by The Man Cave, created to empower men in leadership, coaching, and umpiring roles to drive positive cultural change in community football.

Mates On The Mark is all about good blokes in footy taking small but meaningful steps to make the game more welcoming for everyone, especially women and girls. By joining the program, you’ll get practical tools to create a positive environment where more people feel like they belong, helping to support and keep more women and girls involved in footy.

Through a 3 hour workshop, you’ll gain a better understanding of the everyday challenges women and girls face in football and discover ways to make their experience better and keep them in the game. This isn’t about changing the game, it’s about growing it together so that everyone has a place on the field and off.

Alongside industry leaders you’ll be supported to challenge outdated ideas and help build a stronger, more unified football community.

This workshop is all about having a real conversation about the kind of club we want to be part of.

We’ll have a straight-up discussion about what’s working in club culture, and what could be stronger.

You’ll get the chance to:

Openly about the common expectations placed on men in community footy.

On the behaviours we see around clubs.

How certain behaviours can land for women and girls at the club.

To step in early, back your mates, and set clear standards when it counts.

Mates On The Mark is a leadership development program that will be run by your League.

Are you ready to lead by example, or know someone who would want to get involved? Contact your club for your League’s program dates.

Unpack the tension that arises when people use their bodies in ways that challenge societal expectations - whether in sport, at work, or through self-expression.

As the first male AFL player in the sport’s 129 year history to come out as bisexual, Mitch, and the public’s reaction to his story, epitomises the importance of visibility, role models and the creation of safe and inclusive environments.

Brodie Grundy unpacks the tension between group culture and personal values, and what it really means to show up as your best self.

In this powerful documentary, we unpack how seemingly harmless 'jokes', group chat banter, and everyday attitudes help normalise harmful behaviours. Featuring educators, athletes and activists, we explore the 'rape culture pyramid', bust common myths (like that false accusations are common and that men can't be assaulted), and examine how media and language shape what we think is normal.
