Moreton Bay and Morningside will 'hold their own'
The Round 1 matchup between the two QAFLW newcomers was always going to draw some interest, and the result was two very well-prepared sides going head-to-head in four entertaining quarters of football. With a mix of QAFLW mainstays, talented youth and QFAW Division 1 senior players who've made the transition to the QAFLW on display, both sides looked at the level and will strongly compete throughout their debut season.
AND Coorparoo might do more than 'hold their own'
The Kings have kicked off their QAFL campaign in style, downing Broadbeach by 37 at home. Coorparoo kicked the opening goal and never looked back, with key recruits Kyle Dunkley and Jonah Licht booting five goals between them in the opening quarter to set the tone for the match. To cap it off, the future is bright with their Colts also enjoying a win in their first game in the QAFL. After producing a convincing win against a highly touted Broadbeach outfit, we might just see the Kings take a few big scalps in their debut season.
Wolbers is ageing like a fine wine
Heading into his 14th season of senior football, veteran Hornet Will Wolbers celebrated his 100th senior match in the brown and gold hoops on Saturday and shows no signs of slowing down. Wolbers had 33 hit outs, 21 disposals, nine clearances, two tackles and four inside 50s helping Aspley to a convincing win over Wilston Grange.
PBC might just have the three biggest recruits in the QAFL
Tom Simpson (Labrador), Levi Casboult (GC SUNS) and Harry Benson (St Mary’s, GFL) showed they will be highly damaging this season, after strong individual displays in their first official outings for Palm Beach Currumbin. Simpson had 41 possessions, nine clearances and four goals, Benson supported with 42 possessions, five tackles and two goals, and Casboult with five majors dominated the stats sheet, proving the Lions have more than covered for the loss of the 2024 Grogan Medalist.
Wilston Grange have come a long way
Since securing their first QAFLW win in 672 days at the beginning of 2023, the Gorillas have been on a steady rise. The gritty four point win against arguably one of the top sides in the competition and arch northside rivals Aspley, is a huge result to kick off their 2025 campaign.
Bags of goals are back
Who doesn't love watching a forward kick a bag of goals? Across the TPIL Lawyers QAFL and Bond University QAFLW, numerous players recorded large hauls, including Sam Cilmi (PBC) and Connor Stackelberg (Aspley) booting six, whilst Angus Byrne (Noosa), Levi Casboult (PBC), Matt Hammelmann (RVP), Maddy Baldwin (Southport) and Kierra Zerafa (Southport) booted five each.
