Two goals in the space of two minutes in the fourth quarter have seen Palm Beach Currumbin stave off a determined Broadbeach at Neptunes Home Oval, Merrimac.
In a tight contest, the visitors prevailed 9.13.(67) to the Cats 8.9.(57).
At the 16-minute mark of the final term busy Lions midfielder Tom Simpson was bundled over by an opponent after he disposed of the ball on the attacking half- forward line.
Despite appeals by Lions supporters for the free to be awarded downfield and closer to goal, Simpson took his kick from where the infringement occurred. To the delight of his supporters, he calmly slotted home the opening goal of the term to give the Lions a handy 12-point lead.
This was followed up just moments later when the Cats tried to clear form their defensive zone, but the Lions forced the ball back into forward line from a penetrating kick by Jackson Farrell which found its way into the arms of small forward Sam Cilmi.
From 40-metres out, Cilmi again made no mistake and entering time-on PBC found themselves with a three-goal advantage.
Despite a late surge by Broadbeach resulting in a goal to forward Jye Lockett, the siren sounded soon after to have the Lions home by 10 points.
It was PBC’s fourth win of the season and maintained their second position on the ladder behind Redland-Victoria Point, while the Cats missed an opportunity for their second win and sit eight points outside the top six.
Earlier in better conditions, the Lions took the early advantage with a four-goal to two opening term and basically held a narrow margin throughout the match before securing the game with that two-goal burst in the final quarter.
Broadbeach will rue a red-time lapse in the first quarter when the Lions’ Harry Benson pounced on a loose ball in the forward pocket and snapped truly.
While former Carlton and Gold Coast Suns forward Levi Casboult gave PBC the initial advantage with a goal on the siren. He was a natural target up forward and ended the match with two goals along with Simpson.
The heavens opened late in the second term making play difficult for both teams, but PBC were able to hold off any challenge the Cats threw at them.
Aside from Casboult and Simpson, Harry Benson, Zac Harrison, Hunter Hall and Liam O’Brien featured prominently for the Lions.
There were no multiple goalkickers for Broadbeach who shared the scoring opportunities around. However, tall forward Taine Dawson booted his first goal of the season to open the scoring for the home team. Ryan Gilmore, Adam Hull, James Tsitas, Harrison Mackenzie, Matt Harvey and Ryan Dienjes were listed amongst the best for the Cats.
