The Queensland Wheelchair Football League only continues to grow, with Mt Gravatt Vultures joining the competition in 2025.
The league will return this Sunday, with five mixed teams – Redcliffe, Morningside, Beenleigh, Ormeau and now Mt Gravatt, vying for the premiership.
The seven-week fixture will see games held across South East Queensland, including a regional round held in Toowoomba in Round 3.
AFL Queensland’s Participation and Programs Manager – Schools, Inclusion and Diversity Jeff Neumann said the competition was on track for a participation record.
“We are so excited to welcome back players for another year of competitive AFL Wheelchair,” Neumann said.
“With the inclusion of the Mt Gravatt Vultures we will have more players than ever before.
“This year we will be introducing new offerings including AFL Wheelchair – Social Play, aimed at encouraging people unfamiliar with the sport to give it a go in a more relaxed setting.
“We will also have female only match day opportunities, so watch this space.”
Mt Gravatt Vultures President James Mavromati said joining the competition was an important milestone for their club.
“The wheelchair team is a very welcome addition to the club,” he said.
“We as a club decided that we needed to become more inclusive for the entire community.
“It was a proud moment handing the team their inaugural jumpers last night and we can’t wait to see them in action on Sunday."
