The round kicks off on Friday night with a highly anticipated Battle of the Beaches showdown between Nightcliff and Waratah.
With the finals just around the corner, both sides will be eager to elevate their form if they are to be considered genuine premiership threats.
The Tigers enter as deserved favourites and look the stronger outfit on paper, but the Warriors proved they are more than capable when they claimed the honours in the pair’s previous meeting.
Waratah will enter with confidence after accounting for Wanderers a fortnight ago. Joel Stevens was superb with 30-plus disposals and a pair of majors, while skipper Scott Carlin and the ever-reliable Cody Szust have continued their strong campaigns and were both excellent in last weekend’s representative clash.
For the Tigers, Mitch Trewhella continues to fly under the radar but was outstanding a fortnight ago against Palmerston, while classy forward Brett Kennedy delivered his best performance of the season with a four-goal haul.
It shapes as a high-quality contest.
On Saturday, traditional rivals Darwin and St Marys go head-to-head in what shapes as a significant test for the Buffaloes.
The Saints are on fire having won their past six matches, including victories over heavily-fancied opponents Southern Districts and Nightcliff. Jacob Long and Ben Rioli were superb in defence a fortnight ago in a commanding win over PINT, while the Saints’ on-ball brigade – led by Dylan Landt and Connor West – continues to trouble opposition midfields.
Darwin have shown patches of impressive football this season but will need to produce a four-quarter performance to challenge one of the competition benchmarks. The Buffaloes have named an inexperienced line-up, though it presents a valuable opportunity for several talented juniors to gain exposure at senior level.
Southern Districts will start as commanding favourites when they host Wanderers at Norbuilt Oval on Saturday night.
The Crocs kicked 24 goals – including 11 in the opening term – the last time these two teams met, so the Eagles are going to need to find a way to restrict their opponents’ scoring power. But that is a task that is easier said than done when you consider the star power that Districts have all across the ground.
Wanderers showed plenty of fight in their last outing against Waratah a fortnight ago before ultimately falling short. Cody Leggett was again the star, amassing 38 disposals, while skipper Matthew Motlop continues to lead from the front with another consistent season.
Expect the Crocs to get the job done comfortably in this match-up.
The final match of the round will see Tiwi Bombers host Palmerston at TIO Stadium on Saturday night.
The Bombers enter in strong form after accounting for Darwin, with milestone man Braedon McLean leading the charge alongside Nigel Lockyer and the returning Sam Darley. Expect Tiwi’s trademark run and flair to feature prominently once again as they look to build momentum heading toward the business end of the season.
