School’s back! And so is the return of school footy with three premier schools’ competitions ready to kick off for another season.

The Associated Independent Colleges (AIC) held trials over the weekend ahead of their 9th year hosting an Australian rules football competition for their member schools.

AIC is the largest private school sporting organisation in Queensland, offering 16 sports for its eight member Colleges.

AFL Queensland’s Participation and Programs Manager for Schools, Inclusion, and Diversity, Jeff Neumann, said the competition had continued to grow this year, providing more opportunities for kids to play footy.

“2025 will see more than 2,425 students participate in AIC football across 117 teams, which is a significant achievement and a fantastic outcome for schoolboy footy,” he said.

“In another big step forward for the competition, this year also marks the first time St Peters Lutheran College and St Edmund’s College have fielded primary school teams.

“There are now four divisions in each of the primary school competitions, along with a new competition for Year 10 students.”

The competition begins this weekend.

The Catholic Secondary Schoolgirls' Sports Association (CaSSSA) competition will also get underway next week.

CaSSSA is a sporting association for girls from fourteen Catholic secondary schools based in south-east Queensland and is one of AFL Queensland’s biggest endorsed school football competitions.

“Senior A and B competitions will be played this term involving students in years 10, 11 and 12 on blockbuster Wednesday afternoon fixtures,” said Neumann.

“It’s fantastic to continue to see significant growth in the CaSSSA competitions, giving girls the opportunity to play our game whilst representing their school.”

February 15th will see the return of Australian rules football to the Queensland Girls Secondary Schools Sports Association (QGSSSA) sporting calendar.

With open, senior a and senior b divisions (for students enrolled in years 10 to 12) to be contested over a five-week competition.

The QGSSSA competition, now in its 5th year, is supported by the Brisbane Lions and Caltex.

“AFL Queensland and QGSSSA have put significant investment into this competition since it was first offered as a trial sport to the association in 2021, and became an official endorsed sport in 2024,” said Neumann.

“It’s great to see more and more girls getting either their first taste of the game or the competition complimenting the students club football journeys.”
