AFL Queensland will be running a six week senior men's competition in the Northern Rivers, starting next month, reigniting local football opportunities for men in the region.

AFL Queensland have worked alongside current, licensed clubs in the area, AFL NSW/ACT and other stakeholders in order to get this competition off the ground.

The competition will commence on Saturday July 19 and run through until Saturday August 23 with fixtures held at venues across the region.

Queensland Competitions Manager, Mitchell Simpson is hopeful numerous teams will sign up for the 2025 competition.

"We're anticipating teams based in Ballina, Byron Bay, Nimbin, Brunswick Heads, Lennox Heads, Kingscliff, Casino, Lismore and Tweed Heads will want to be involved," he said.

"We recognise senior men's football in the region has seen some challenges over the past five years.

"Our aim is for this competition to provide some localised social football content to build interest and engagement in AFL across the Northern Rivers region, which should contribute to the overall growth and sustainability of football in the area".

Whilst taking on a traditional AFL look and feel, the six-week competition will take on some modifications to remove the barriers to participating, including 14-a-side matches and shortened quarters.

"With only a six week commitment, we're anticipating this format will see a number of players return to our game, whilst others looking to give AFL a go can do so in a social setting," he said.
