The Tiwi Umpire Mentor Program has returned with powerful impact, as AFL Northern Territory (AFLNT) continues to invest in growing local capability and leadership across remote football communities.
Delivered in partnership between the AFLNT Umpiring and Indigenous Programs teams, the program brought together TIO NTFL umpires and aspiring match officials from the Tiwi Islands across two weekends in May and June.
Focused on mentoring, connection, and skills development, the initiative is creating tangible pathways for Tiwi based umpires to progress from local matches to Darwin football carnivals and even into the TIO NTFL competition. Twelve umpires took part across the sessions, including two new recruits who were mentored and supported throughout.
“The enthusiasm to be part of the umpiring group was clear,” said umpire mentor Michael Wellington. “There’s already a deep understanding of the game – now it’s about continuing to build confidence and staying connected as these umpires develop.”
Encouraging greater female participation has been a core focus of the program, with positive momentum building. Women and girls are not only stepping forward to umpire, but actively shaping a culture that embraces leadership and inclusion through football.
Diversity Talent Programs Manager and TIO NTFL umpire Narelle Long shared her excitement about being part of the program.
“Being part of Tiwi football is always special but helping empower local Tiwi women through umpiring was truly powerful — it created space for growth, passion, and community strength.”
Local coaches and players have also played a vital role, fostering mutual respect on game day and building a sense of shared accountability for the success of Tiwi football.
“This program is about investing in people and creating long-term pathways for Tiwi umpires,” said AFLNT Umpiring Lead, Martin Oosthuysen. “We’re building real connections that will carry into the NTFL season and beyond, and the potential we’re seeing from these umpires is just the beginning.”
The Tiwi Umpire Mentor Program supports AFLNT’s broader strategy to grow, engage and retain umpires across the Territory. It’s building more than just officiating talent - it’s creating meaningful opportunities to earn, lead and contribute to a healthier future for community football.
The program is proudly supported and possible through funding from the AFL’s Game Development and Indigenous Participation (GDIP) program, the Australian Sports Commission (ASC), and the National Indigenous Australians Agency (NIAA).
