AFL Northern Territory’s new Top End Youth Academy has recorded more than 500 club nominations, indicating a strong start ahead of the program’s launch.

Following an initial expression of interest process delivered through TIO NTFL Clubs, the response from across the Greater Darwin community has been outstanding, highlighting both the strength of local football and the growing demand for structured, high-quality development opportunities for young players.

In line with the Academy’s inclusive, community-first approach, AFLNT is pleased to confirm that self-nominations are now open for players who are not currently aligned with an TIO NTFL Club. This ensures every young Territorian aged 10–15 can be part of the program and take the next step in their football journey.

Participation, Schools & Diversity Manager Simon Lavers, said the milestone reflects the strong appetite for development opportunities and the energy around the game across the Top End.

“The response so far has been outstanding and shows the passion for footy right across the community, we’re grateful to the clubs, families and coaches who have engaged so strongly with the new Academy”, Lavers said.

“Opening self-nominations is a really important step. It ensures that any young person who wants to improve, be part of a team environment, and grow their game has the opportunity to put themselves forward.

“Just as importantly, the Academy is fully funded, so families can access a high-quality development program without cost being a barrier.”

With trials set to commence in the coming weeks, selected players from the nomination pool will be invited into initial squads, with final Academy positions to be confirmed following the trial process.

The Top End Youth Academy will deliver a structured, year-round program for boys and girls aged 10–15, focused on skill development, game understanding, leadership, and wellbeing.

As a key part of the Northern Territory football pathway, the Top End Youth Academy will complement existing programs, including the Cazalys NT Academy, and help bridge the gap between grassroots participation and elite development.

Built on strong foundations of inclusion, professionalism and cultural respect, the Top End Youth Academy is set to play a vital role in developing confident young people on and off the field, while strengthening the future of the game across the region.

AFLNT would like to thank TIO NTFL clubs, families, coaches and the wider football community for their support and enthusiasm in helping bring the Academy to life.

Self-nomination details are available now via this form.
