WILSTON GRANGE survived a late rally by ASPLEY to prevail by five points 4.6.(30) to 3.7.(25). The Gorillas had led by 18 points at three-quarter time after goals to Keyshia Matenga and Tshinta Kendall in the third term.
However, two quick goals in the first five minutes of the final quarter to Jessica Stallard and Kaitlyn Day brought the Hornets back into the contest. The remainder of the game was an intense struggle with only a behind each adding to the scores and left the Gorillas to celebrate when the final siren sounded.
Siobhan Senior with 25 disposals and 15 contested possessions together with Mackenzie Findlay (also 15 contested possessions) were prominent in the home side’s win, ably supported by Keyshia Matenga, Grace Osborne and Summer Hamilton.
On a huge day for the club after the men had an upset win over Redland Victoria Point, the women’s victory saw them remain fifth on the ladder and now a game clear of Aspley (6th).
MORNINGSIDE completed the season double over rivals COORPAROO in a top four clash at Jack Esplen Oval 6.6 (42) to 4.2.(26).
The Panthers kicked four goals in the first half while keeping their opponents goalless. The Kings managed to outscore the home team three goals to two in the second half, but the damage had been done and went down by 16 points. Gracie Roy was dominant with 30 touches of the football and 5 tackles for the victors whilst Chelsea Winn had 30 disposals of her own for Coorparoo.
Morningside retain their second spot on the ladder while Coorparoo slip one spot to fourth following BOND UNIVERSITY’S big win over MARROCHYDORE 12.13.(85) to 1.2.(8)
The Bulls Sharks were in control from the first bounce with Ella Calleja kicking three goals and Amelia Ella two.
Bond University now climb to third and be game a clear of Coorparoo.
In the other matches, MORETON BAY showed they have a bright future with nine individual goalkickers in their win over YERONGA SOUTH BRISBANE.
Tahlia Benson and Jessica Davy with three apiece as the Lions recorded their third win of the season while Emmerson Brady showed plenty of determination laying 13 tackles.
Meanwhile SOUTHPORT continued their unbeaten season with a dominant performance over University of Queensland. Tayla Gregory booted four goals for the Sharks with Tyla Crabtree, Maddy Baldwin and Maighan Fogas two each.
The Bond University QAFLW also takes a competition bye next weekend with the State team in Tasmania and returns for round 12 on Saturday July 12.
