AFL NSW/ACT proudly launched Women's Coaching Month with an engaging and inspiring
event hosted at the home of the GWS GIANTS.
The launch was held within the GIANTS' elite training facility, marking an ideal setting to
celebrate and promote women in coaching.
The highlight was an interactive panel discussion facilitated by GWS GIANTS Media and PR Lead,
Tilly Werner, featuring:
- Georgia Walker - Former AFLW player and current GIANTS AFLW assistant coach
- Ryan O’Keefe - AFL NSW/ACT coaching development and education lead, former
Adelaide Crows development coach, Norm Smith Medallist, All-Australian, and former
Sydney Swan - Katherine Smith - GIANTS AFLW Vice-Captain and AFL NSW/ACT Women’s and Girls
Community Football Lead
Panellists shared personal coaching journeys, valuable lessons, and insights into their current
roles.

Katherine Smith emphasised the significance of the event, stating, ‘Celebrating women in
coaching is essential because you can't become what you can't see.
By elevating women's voices and providing visible role models, we create a clear and attainable
pathway for the next generation of female coaches.
It’s vital to show female athletes that there is a future in coaching, and it's one filled with
opportunities and support.’

The event saw attendance from over 30 dedicated coaches representing various Australian
football clubs and communities from across New South Wales and the ACT.
Attendees thoroughly enjoyed the experience, which included complimentary GIANTS
merchandise and the chance to network with peers while enjoying refreshments and nibbles
provided throughout the evening.
Adding to the excitement, every participant was gifted free tickets to the AFL Round 18 match
between the GIANTS and Geelong.
The event also featured a raffle with three incredible prizes on offer: a signed GWS AFLW
guernsey, an exclusive day out for the winner and ten mates at an AFLW game, complete with
drink vouchers, and a generous $250 voucher for Sherrin products.

The successful launch of Women's Coaching Month set a strong foundation for the month
ahead, demonstrating AFL NSW/ACT and the GIANTS’ unwavering commitment to empowering
women to pursue rewarding careers in Australian football.
