National Harmony Day & AFL’s Everyone Matters: Promoting Inclusion Through Sport
March 21 marks National Harmony Day, a celebration of Australia’s cultural diversity and a reminder that everyone belongs. It’s a perfect opportunity for teachers to engage students in conversations about inclusion, respect, and belonging - both in the classroom and on the sporting field.
AFL’s Everyone Matters resource, available on AFL PLAY, is designed to help students explore these important themes through the lens of Australian Rules Football. The resource encourages students to reflect on the power of sport in bringing people together, promoting fairness, and celebrating differences.
By incorporating Everyone Matters into your Harmony Day lessons, students can:
🏉 Learn about AFL players and teams that champion diversity and inclusion
🏉 Participate in engaging activities that reinforce teamwork and respect
🏉 Reflect on how they can contribute to an inclusive and welcoming environment
Encourage students to wear orange - the official colour of Harmony Day - and take part in AFL-inspired activities that highlight the message: Everyone matters, on and off the field.
