This past weekend delivered some entertaining football around Tasmania, with all Premier Leagues finally underway in 2025.

SFL Premier League - Glenorchy vs North Hobart

In the south of the state, both Glenorchy and North Hobart’s men’s and women’s sides clashed in succession on Saturday afternoon at KGV Oval.

The men’s sides faced off first, and North Hobart were in control early after notching 4.4 to the Pies’ 1.4 in the opening term.

Scoring flowed freely in the second quarter, with nine majors kicked between the two sides. However, the Demons held on to a lead of 25 points at the half.

North Hobart remained in control in the second half despite some inaccuracy and ultimately emerged victorious over Glenorchy, winning 13.13 (91) to 8.14 (62).

Harrison Mcleod (eight rebound inside-50s, 10 marks, 25 disposals) and William Peppin (one goal, five marks, 25 disposals) were pivotal for the Demons.

Meanwhile, Keegan Wylie (eight rebound inside-50s, 10 marks, 29 disposals) and Benjamin Barwick (one goal, six marks, 18 disposals) stood tall for the Pies despite the loss.

The women’s game kicked off soon after, with North Hobart registering two goals to three Glenorchy behinds in the first quarter.

The Demons extended to a 18-point lead at half-time after a low-scoring second term, and maintained their grip on the contest despite a seesawing third quarter.

A dominant four-goal final quarter from North Hobart sealed a 9.11 (65) to 3.5 (23) victory for Dees over Glenorchy.

North Hobart’s Grace White (10 marks, 10 inside-50s, 26 disposals) and Madi Lamb (one goal, nine tackles, 26 disposals) were superb in the Dees’ win over Glenorchy.

For the Pies, Brieanna Barwick (six tackles, eight clearances, 31 disposals) and Rhianna Davis (five marks, 17 rebound inside-50s, 25 disposals) were defiant in defeat.

NTFA Premier League - South Launceston vs Launceston

The NTFA Premier Leagues commenced for 2025 on Saturday, with South Launceston and Launceston facing off in a double-header at Youngtown Memorial Oval.

The men’s senior teams for both clubs faced off first, with the Bulldogs kicking 2.2 to four Launceston behinds in the opening quarter.

However, Launceston struck back in emphatic fashion in the second term, taking full  advantage of a strong breeze by kicking 7.5 to 1.1, thus securing a 30-point lead at half-time.

The Blues continued to command the contest after half-time, holding South Launceston goalless in the third term and extending their lead to 42 points at the final change.

Despite their inaccuracy in the final quarter kicking 5.11, Launceston cruised to a 14.23 (107) to 4.6 (30) win over the Bulldogs.

Lucas Wootton (eight inside-50s, 12 clearances, 26 disposals) and Archie Wilkinson (four goals, 11 marks, 24 disposals) were impressive for the Blues in a big win.

Meanwhile, Olly Woodcock-Davis (seven marks, 17 rebound inside-50s, 34 disposals) and Grant Holt (six marks, seven tackles, 22 disposals) played with pride for the Bulldogs.

Following the men’s game, South Launceston and Launceston’s women’s senior sides kicked off their seasons against one another.

The hosts kicked two goals straight to Launceston’s 1.3 in the first term, and extended their lead in the following quarter to 16 points at the main interval.

The Blues recovered some ground after half-time, keeping South Launceston scoreless throughout the third term and reducing the margin to eight points at three-quarter-time.

In the end, the Dogs were too good, holding off a defiant Launceston in the last quarter to win 6.4 (40) to 2.6 (18).

NWFL Premier League - Circular Head vs East Devonport, Penguin vs Devonport

In the women’s NWFL Premier League, Penguin and Devonport resumed hostilities at Dial Park on Saturday afternoon.

Penguin made a strong start at home, kicking 3.2 in the first quarter and keeping Devonport scoreless throughout.

The hosts kicked away in the second term, extending to a notable lead of 38 points at the main break.

Regardless of a low-scoring third quarter, Penguin continued to further their lead as the match went on.

The Two Blues charged toward victory in the final quarter, kicking 5.3 and keeping the Magpies scoreless once again.

Ultimately, it was a stellar 14.10 (94) to 2.1 (13) win for Penguin on their home deck, and their first for season 2025.

Shania Saward (four goals, eight clearances, 29 disposals) and Libby Haines (three goals, seven marks, 20 disposals) were among Penguin’s finest in their win over Devonport.

And on a tough afternoon, Devonport’s Sarah Skinner (one goal, six marks, 18 disposals) and Kelsey Aherne (six one-percenters, seven tackles, 15 disposals) held their ground.

In the men’s NWFL Premier League, Circular Head and East Devonport did battle in a twilight fixture at Circular Head Recreation Ground.

The Swans held a slender lead early in the piece after kicking 2.4 to Circular Head’s 1.4 in the first term.

However, the Saints hit back, kicking seven goals to one in the following interval and taking a 32-point lead into half-time.

Circular Head continued to pile on the pain in the third term, kicking eight goals to two and taking their lead in excess of ten goals.

The Saints cruised to a big win with six goals in the last quarter and were ultimately victorious 21.12 (138) to 7.7 (49).                  

Circular Head’s Liam Davies (one goal, nine marks, 30 disposals) and Cameron Johns (nine goals, 11 marks, 20 disposals) were excellent in a big win over the Swans.

And in a heavy loss, East Devonport’s Jack Goss (one goal, nine marks, 30 disposals) and Dylan Moore (five one-percenters, 11 tackles, 24 disposals) held firm.
