The Tasmanian football community farewells a Hall of Famer, a beloved larrikin, and a tireless administrator — William ‘Billy’ Sorell.

Billy was a cherished figure in our football family — a passionate advocate for the game and a legendary presence at every long lunch. He was larger than life, with a booming laugh, a generous spirit, and an unwavering commitment to the sport he loved.

For 23 incredible seasons, Bill served his beloved Sandy Bay Seagulls in the TFL. He witnessed and helped shape their golden era during the 1970s, seeing them achieve multiple state and regional titles. Even as the club went into recess in the '90s, his loyalty and support never wavered.

Bill’s contribution didn’t stop at club level. He dedicated himself to Tasmanian football in a range of off-field roles, showcasing his talent for promotion and administration. He joined the TFL management team during the finals campaigns from 1984 to 1987 and went on to serve on the boards of the TFL and the Tasmanian Devils VFL team. His commitment was such that he became a long-standing employee of AFL Tasmania, playing a role behind the scenes at the game’s governing body.

His efforts were formally recognised with the AFL Merit Award in 2005, and he was proudly inducted as the 270th member of the Tasmanian Football Hall of Fame.

One of Bill’s most iconic contributions was the transformation of the Sandy Bay Football Club Grand Final Luncheon into the now-renowned Bill Sorell Sports Luncheon — a highlight on the football calendar. For over four decades, the event sold out year after year, drawing more than 700 guests annually and attracting big-name guest speakers. It isn’t just a lunch — it’s an institution, driven by Bill’s passion and presence.

Right up until his passing, Bill remained devoted to the game, recently recommitting to sponsor the Old Scholars Football Association. He was also a staunch and vocal supporter of Tasmania’s push for its own team.

His love for the Sandy Bay Football Club, Hutchins Old Scholars, his Carlton Blues, and the Tasmanian football community ran deep. And, of course, nothing delighted him more than a long lunch with good company and great football talk.

AFL Tasmania acknowledges the passing of a true football person and extends its heartfelt condolences to Bill’s loved ones.

Rest easy, Bill. Your legacy will live on.
