The 2025 AFL Victoria Metro Junior Development Series is set to commence tomorrow, Wednesday 28 May in what will the biggest ever edition of the annual junior interleague competition.
The 2025 Series will continue to build on last year's record number of participants, with the welcome inclusion of the Mornington Peninsula Junior Football League (MPJFL), Outer East Football Netball (OEFN) and South East Juniors (SEJ) who will field representative teams in the series for 2025.
The Metro Junior Development Series is a talent pathway development program for under 14s and under 15s boys and girls Australian rules footballers. In 2025, more than 1600 players from 11 different local football leagues across Victoria will participate in the expanded program, which runs over four days:
Wednesday 28 May (evening matches starting at either 5.15pm or 7.15pm)
Wednesday 4 June (evening matches starting at either 5.15pm or 7.15pm)
Saturday 7 June (day matches starting at either 10am, 12pm or 2pm)
Monday 9 June (day matches starting at either 10am, 12pm or 2pm)
The development series gives community leagues the opportunity to select players whose performance at local club level has warranted selection to participate in the interleague competition, as part of the talent pathway to higher-level programs for boys and girls, such as the Coates Talent League.
The 2025 Series will include representative teams from 11 leagues across metropolitan Melbourne:
Eastern Football Netball League (EFNL)
Essendon District Football League (EDFL)
Frankston & District Junior Football League (FDJFL)
Mornington Peninsula Junior Football League (MPJFL)
Northern Football Netball League (NFNL)
Outer East Football Netball (OEFN)
Riddell District Football Netball League (RDFNL)
South East Juniors (SEJ)
South Metro Junior Football League (SMJFL)
Western Football Netball League (WFNL)
Yarra Junior Football League (YJFL)
In 2024, the competition expanded to now include two Under 14 Girls divisions, and there was a total of 78 matches played across the three match days. In 2025, due to the addition of three more leagues participating, this will increase to a total of 93 matches played across the four match days in the following eight age groups and divisions:
U15 Boys Division 1 and 2
U15 Girls Division 1 and 2
U14 Boys Division 1 and 2
U14 Girls Division 1 and 2
Approximately 25 different venues will host matches across the series, including RSEA Park in Moorabbin, Windy Hill in Essendon and Kinetic Stadium in Frankston.
