SO MANY WAYS TO UMPIRE

Students have the opportunity to umpire for their school in competitions running from Term 1 to Term 4. These experiences provide skill development and may lead to selection as an umpire at the state finals.

You can umpire at your club through the Umpire4Fun program when beginning your journey, or work as a club umpire in youth and senior competitions. These opportunities build confidence, skills, and community while supporting grassroots sport.

Contact your Club Umpire Coordinator for more information.

Registering as a league umpire means AFL Queensland appoints you to matches throughout the season. You choose your own availability, and we schedule you at venues close to home or your club. League umpires are also eligible for finals appointments.

You can register as an umpire in the AFL Masters Queensland competition, whether you’re a current player or simply keen to stay involved. Development and upskilling opportunities are provided during the Legends rounds, supporting growth and connection.

Umpires can also be involved in AFL through alternative formats that offer unique experiences. AFL Nines provides a fun, non contact social version of the game, perfect for those seeking enjoyment without pressure. Inclusion and Wheelchair Leagues create rewarding opportunities, making AFL more accessible and inclusive for all participants.

Each region runs weekly training sessions across all disciplines and manages umpire appointments during the season. Those selected into the Regional Umpiring Academy receive additional coaching, development, and exciting opportunities to advance their officiating journey.

UMPIRE4FUN

Umpire4Fun is a club based introductory program, guiding the first step in an umpire’s journey. AFL Queensland provides training, with some clubs offering extra training sessions. Umpires officiate U8–U10 games before progressing to league or club umpiring after 1–2 years.

More to Umpiring - Unique Opportunities

The Match Day Experience celebrates the dedication of our umpires. At each Brisbane Lions and Gold Coast Suns home game, one umpire enjoys exclusive behind‑the‑scenes access - meeting the officiating team, walking onto the field, and umpiring at half‑time.

An exciting opportunity for umpires from across the state to be part of the Premier Schools Finals, where State Champions are crowned. Across three action‑packed days, umpires receive expert coaching and the chance to officiate a wide variety of teams and age groups - gaining invaluable experience while being part of one of the season’s biggest events.

The Benson Trust Umpire Exchange Program is a development initiative associated with the AFL Queensland Umpires Association (AFLQUA). Its purpose is to provide emerging umpires with opportunities to gain experience in different football environments by travelling to other states or leagues

You’ll have access to national training resources, coaching, online modules, and year-round development. AFL Queensland also runs regular on-field and online sessions, plus a library of extra learning materials for anyone wanting to grow their umpiring skills.

Women & Girls can access a wide range of opportunities across the state, including school holiday camps, Experience Hubs, and ongoing support through our W&G Umpire Liaison Program.

Specialised Programs

The Umpiring Inclusion Program is designed for people living with a disability. Delivered at clubs participants already know and feel connected to, the program provides tailored training and development to become confident umpires and contribute meaningfully to their club and the wider football community.

The AFL is launching a Regional Umpire4Fun program focused on female participation. Three regions will be selected for the pilot, with AFLQ staff delivering training sessions throughout the year. Clubs in these regions can access financial incentives, with rewards for the highest levels of engagement and involvement.

AFL Queensland is proud to become a Duke 4Sport partner with the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award- Australia (the Duke of Ed). AFL umpiring gives 14–24-year-olds a unique opportunity to complete all three Duke of Ed sections, stay active, and develop lifelong skills in communication, confidence, and critical thinking.

Schools across Queensland can access AFL Queensland’s Introduction to Umpiring Program, designed to give students a fun first experience with umpiring. Delivered onsite, these sessions build confidence, teach key skills, and create pathways into community umpiring.
