ANZAC Round remains one of the most special
Clubs across the TPIL Lawyers QAFL and Bond University QAFLW stopped to commemorate and show their respect across the weekend's ANZAC Round. A number of moving ceremonies were held at venues across the competitions, creating spine-tingling moments for those in attendance. Clubs marked the occasion by hosting ceremonies, wearing commemorative jumpers, visiting local RSLs, and attending Dawn Services and memorials. On Friday, Coorparoo welcomed Bond University and Sherwood for a QAFLW/QAFL Double Header, which concluded with a rare twilight QAFL match at Giffin Park. Yeronga also hosted Maroochydore in a QAFLW clash on ANZAC Day. Meanwhile, Maroochydore faced Noosa in the traditional QAFL Sunshine Coast ANZAC Round Derby, with both teams delivering a tough, hard-fought match that honoured the spirit of the day.
Sherwood's next month is critical
Sherwood have started the season 3-1, putting some seriously good football on display and currently sit equal second on the ladder. With a mix of rising stars establishing themselves as senior footballers, and key recruits hitting their straps, many are suggesting a return to finals could be on the cards for the Magpies. With current wins against Mt Gravatt, Coorparoo and Maroochydore, the next three weeks sees fixtures against Redland Victoria Point, Aspley and Morningside. If Sherwood emerge from the next four weeks with a couple of scalps, they will cement a spot as a genuine finals contender.
Who's stopping Southport?
The reigning premiers have continued to flex their muscles with three dominant wins from their first three games in the Bond University QAFLW. They face off against Gold Coast rivals, and 2024 Grand Final opponent in Bond University this weekend in undoubtably the match of the round. With the Bullsharks also starting the season impressively with three wins and likely to feature in finals, the clash of the Sharks this weekend will give a good insight into how close the top of the table is.
Redland Victoria Point are top shelf
With Round 4 giving us a juicy 2 v 3 matchup, many predicted a tight tussle with RVP and PBC; two of the in form teams of 2025. What occured was a dominant 75 point win by the Sharks, with their guns all firing. Matt Hammelmann was at his best, booting seven majors, whilst at the other end veteren defender Adrian Williams was all class holding Casboult to just two goals. Malone domniated the ruck with 53 hit outs, giving plenty of first use to Aston (28 D, 6 C), Petterwood (23 D, 9 C), whilst Josh Brown continued to accumulate goals kicking three. With two Grand Final losses in two years, is 2025 their year?
When do the grounds dry out?
With at times biblical conditions wreaking havoc across the first month of the season, patches of rain will continue to fall across Southeast Queensland this weekend. With many clubs having disrupted pre-seasons, re-scheduled fixtures and playing numerous heavily contested games of football, it will be interesting to see how the fitness and match preparation of some clubs hold up heading towards the typically drier months of winter.
