Aspley have toppled ladder leaders Redland Victoria Point with a dominant 50-point win on Saturday at Everleigh AFL precinct in the TPIL Lawyers QAFL Round Seven clash.
The win was set up in the first half with the Hornets booting 13 goals to five including a match winning seven majors in the second term eventually scoring 20.8.(128) to 12.6.(78)
It was the Stackelberg show for Aspley who were led by full-forward Connor Stackelberg who finished with five goals taking his total for the season to 29 from just six matches.
Midfielder Cody Stackelberg had 29 disposals including 10 contested possessions while fellow playmaker Ryan Banks-Smith also dominated with 29 disposals (11 contested possessions) and three goals.
Tom Templeton was also creative with 23 possessions.
The Hornets were simply too strong for the Sharks especially around the stoppages with a plus 25 differential in clearances and more effective and accurate scoring avenues going forward.
This was despite Sharks ruckman Craig Malone winning the hit-outs 40-26 over opponent Will Wolbers but both were influential for their teams in the clearance battle.
While Redland Victoria Point grabbed an early lead in the first term following a goal from Campbell Aston, Aspley kicked five of the next six goals – including two by Joshua Chapman - for the visitors to lead by 16 points at the first change.
They were helped by a 50-metre penalty resulting in a goal to Nicholas Dodge and right on the siren, Connor Stackelberg received a controversial tripping free kick to slot home the first of his five.
Connor grabbed his second early in the second quarter and while the Sharks stayed in contention following a goal from Joshua Brown at the 10-minute mark, it was all Aspley after that with six unanswered goals in 13 minutes.
Jake Howson started the rout as both Connor Stackelberg and Joshua Chapman brought up their third majors, Brandon Batchelor (his second), James Webb got involved before Coen Harker completed the run amongst his three goals and 20 disposals for the match.
Matt Eagles stole one late for the Sharks, but the damage had been done and the home team went into the main break 48 points down.
Aside from Malone and Brown for Redland Victoria Point other contributors included: Nathan Smith, Dylan Smith, Jack Prokos, Darryl McDowell-White and Ethan Petterwood.
Despite having their first loss of the season, the Sharks remain above the Hornets on the ladder in second place on 22 points just ahead of Aspley in third on 20.
