It all comes down to this – Nightcliff and St Marys will meet on the biggest stage, with the 2025/26 TIO NTFL Men’s Premier League premiership cup up for grabs.

Few rivalries in Territory footy have produced as many memorable battles over the past decade as these two Top End powerhouses.

Their 2020/21 grand final remains one of the competition’s great contests, with Nightcliff prevailing in an extra-time thriller that is still spoken about as one of the best games seen in recent NTFL history.

Now, another chapter is set to be written.

The Tigers will take confidence from their qualifying final win a fortnight ago, when they were clearly the stronger side.

Brandan Parfitt and Mitch Trewhella were outstanding around the contest, while Riley Baldi produced a superb shutdown role on Saints skipper, and now three-time Nichols Medallist Dylan Landt.

That match-up looms as one of the most important again on Saturday night, although St Marys may look to throw Baldi a different challenge by sending Landt deeper forward, where he has performed excellently across the past fortnight.

Nightcliff’s tall timber shapes as a significant factor.

Ex-AFL forward Fergus Greene was outstanding a fortnight ago, finishing with four goals, while also working high up the ground to provide a strong aerial outlet.

SANFL player Shay Linke continues to build nicely, and if Zack Derksen is fit to return, the Tigers will become even more difficult to contain inside-50.

Their ability to stretch St Marys defensively could prove crucial, but writing off the Saints in a big final would be foolish.

This is a side that knows exactly what finals football demands.

They went into last year’s preliminary final against Nightcliff as underdogs and still won convincingly, underlining their ability to rise on the biggest occasions.

The return of Connor West has been enormous for St Marys; in fact, there may be no more important player on the ground this Saturday.

West’s class, composure and ability to take some of the pressure of Landt make the Saints a far more dangerous side.

Fellow midfielder Josh Smithson remains one of the more underrated big-game players in the NTFL and is capable of making Nightcliff pay if given too much freedom.

Jackson Braunthal also continues to fly under the radar despite being in terrific form, while half-forward Xavier Vallejo heads into the decider full of confidence after an impressive 24-disposal performance against Southern Districts.

Nightcliff, though, has a different feel about them this year.

The Tigers appear to have timed their run beautifully and look like a side peaking at exactly the right moment.

The likely return of experienced SANFL recruit Rhett Montgomerie would only strengthen their belief – he has been an excellent addition and seems to have grown in influence with every match.

The ledger this season slightly favours Nightcliff, who have won two of the three meetings between the sides.

St Marys, however, did produce a stirring comeback in Round 11 to win by eight points at Nightcliff Oval.

Nightcliff may have the edge on recent form, but St Marys have built a reputation as a side that thrives when the pressure is greatest.

We are set for another classic.
