AFL Northern Territory proudly acknowledges and celebrates the extraordinary contribution of Michael McLean to Australian football. The announcement was made by newly appointed AFL Commission Chair Craig Drummond during his 2026 Season Launch address, confirming Michael as this year’s Sir Doug Nicholls Round honouree.

A former Footscray and Brisbane great, Michael’s impact on our game extends far beyond his outstanding playing career. An All-Australian, dual best and fairest winner and member of Brisbane’s Hall of Fame, he demonstrated excellence at the highest level and earned the respect of teammates, opponents and supporters alike.

Importantly, Michael’s legacy is also defined by his courage and leadership off the field. As one of four pioneering players who helped drive the development of the AFL’s groundbreaking Anti-Vilification Policy 30 years ago, Michael stood up against racism and played a vital role in shaping a policy that transformed our game and set a powerful standard for inclusion and respect across Australian sport.

Today, Michael continues to make a profound impact through his work with AFL Northern Territory’s Talent Academy, where he mentors and guides young footballers on their pathway to elite football. His commitment to developing the next generation reflects the same integrity, strength and leadership that defined his playing career.

For communities across the Northern Territory, where Sir Doug Nicholls Round holds deep significance, Michael’s recognition is especially meaningful. His contribution - both on and off the field - continues to inspire current and future generations.

We congratulate Michael on this richly deserved honour and look forward to celebrating his remarkable contribution to our great game during Sir Doug Nicholls Round.
