Nominations are now open for the 2025 StreetSmarts AFLQ Schools Cup; AFL Queensland’s premier school sport competition.
AFL Queensland is calling on schools from all corners of the state to enter, building on the event’s continued success and year-on-year participation growth.
Since it began in 2016, the StreetSmarts AFLQ Schools Cup has soared to new heights, with a record 745 teams and more than 16,000 students participating in 2024. The competition, which spans from northern New South Wales to Cairns, engages young players in Australian Rules football through a series of localised gala days, culminating in the State Finals held annually on the Sunshine Coast.
Trisha Squires, Head of AFL Queensland, encouraged all schools across the state to take part in 2025.
“We are excited to open nominations for the 2025 StreetSmarts AFLQ Schools Cup and welcome schools from all over Queensland to participate,” she said.
“Our goal is to make the competition accessible to every school, regardless of location or previous experience with Australian rules football.
“We want every student to have the chance to play and enjoy our great game and this competition provides the perfect platform for that.”
With the AFL’s introduction of the new National Junior Framework earlier this year, AFL Queensland run school competitions will implement the new AFL Junior Rules, including establishing a refreshed progression model for the Streetsmarts AFLQ Schools Cup primary schools’ divisions.
StreetSmarts has confirmed its continued support as the naming rights sponsor for the 2025 competition.
Joanna Robinson, General Manager of Land Transport Safety and Regulation at the Department of Transport and Main Roads, highlighted the significance of the partnership in promoting both sport and road safety among young Queenslanders.
“StreetSmarts is proud to again partner with AFL Queensland to deliver the Schools Cup competition. It’s inspiring to see the competition grow year on year, providing more opportunities for young Queenslanders to engage in sport,” she said.
“The StreetSmarts AFLQ Schools Cup also serves as an important platform for promoting road safety, ensuring that students not only kick goals on the field but also carry that awareness with them off the field as they prepare for life as young drivers.”
The StreetSmarts AFLQ Schools Cup continues to be one of the most exciting and inclusive school sports events in Queensland. With registrations now open, AFL Queensland encourages schools to nominate their teams for the 2025 competition.
