The QFAW Division 1 competition will return to being a standalone senior league, with the QFAW Division 1 Reserves competition being discontinued. Division 1 clubs will still have the option to field a second team, which will compete in one of the newly structured QFAW Division 2 competitions.
In a major change for QFAW Division 2, the existing North and South competitions will be joined by the introduction of a new "Central" division. This restructure aims to create a more localised competition environment, reducing travel and enhancing the overall experience for players and clubs.
AFL Queensland Competitions Manager, Mitchell Simpson, spoke about the changes.
“It is our goal to have inviting and accessible competition environments at the entry level of our competition pathways, to ensure we make it as easy as possible for senior women’s footballers to participate in our game,” he said.
“By splitting QFAW Division 2 into three competitions, we will see a significant reduction in travel with an increase in localised fixtures, which has been well received by clubs.”
With the introduction of the Central division, it is anticipated that 30 clubs will compete across the QFAW Division 2 North, Central, and South competitions in 2025.
“We also want to ensure we have clear and differentiated levels of competition across our competition pathway, with Division 1 remaining an aspiration for those in QFAW Division 2,” said Simpson.
“We acknowledge that over the past few seasons there have been a number of sides at the Division 1 standard, however the challenges of fielding two sides has been a barrier to apply for elevation.”
All QFAW Division 2 clubs were invited to apply for elevation to the QFAW Division 1 under the new structure, with Palm Beach Currumbin and Redland Victoria Point being given provisional licenses for 2025.
This will see the QFAW Division 1 competition expand to seven teams in 2025.
In 2025, Coolangatta will return to senior women’s football, having been granted a QFAW Division 2 license. Additionally, Ormeau will make its debut in senior women’s football, with the Bulldogs securing a QFAW Division 2 license for the first time.
