Queensland will face off against Tasmania in men’s and women’s state representative football once again in 2025, with the double header scheduled for Saturday July 5.

The modern instalment of the century old rivalry between the two states will take on a regional feel this year, with Latrobe in Tasmania’s northwest playing host to the representative clashes.

The Latrobe Recreation Ground, home of the Latrobe Demons, boasts a rich history dating back to the late 1800s. For more than 30 years, it has also served as the Grand Final venue for the North West Football League (formerly the NTFL).

The Queensland women’s team will be looking to make it three straight wins in as many years, while the men’s side will be hoping for a breakthrough victory after two heartbreaking defeats to the Tasmanians in 2023 and 2024.

Queensland Competition Manager, Mitchell Simpson, said he was thrilled the best footy talent in Queensland would have the opportunity to represent the state again in 2025.

“The performances of our women’s side over the past two years has showcased the strength of the Bond University QAFLW and that of our women’s pathways across Queensland more broadly,” he said.

“Those inside the men’s program are highly motivated to ensure we come away from Tasmania with a win in 2025, so I look forward to seeing the squad take shape ahead of the clash in July.

“It’s been rewarding to see a number of players, and coaches, from within the program move into the AFLW and AFL systems.

“It’s an honour to continue the rivalry with Tasmania that dates back to 1914, however it’s particularly exciting at present with the hype surrounding the states preparation towards having its own AFL side in the coming years.”

More information about squads and coaching lineups will be announced later in the year.
