Tasmanian squads named for representative games

With Tasmania’s first representative game of the year fast approaching, the initial squads for the state’s men’s and women’s sides have been confirmed.

Tasmania will face Queensland in a men’s and women’s double-header on June 22 at Bond University, Gold Coast, before returning home to take on Sydney/Canberra on July 20 at Launceston’s UTAS Stadium.

With a 45-player men’s squad and a 41-player women’s squad now confirmed, both full-squad and regional training sessions will kick off next week, giving players the opportunity to push their case for selection in these marquee games.

Tasmania Men’s Coach, Aaron Cornelius, said: “It’s an exciting time in Tasmanian football, and to top it off, we have two huge state games this year. With a large squad announced, there are plenty of opportunities for players from across the state to pull on ‘The Map’.

“A large squad has been selected, and with match play planned for the first night, all players will have the opportunity to put their best foot forward.

“With more state games in the future, we are looking to play players that could be a part of this program for multiple years. In doing so, we can show our young talent the level that they need to be at when the VFL team comes in.”

Tasmania Women’s Coach, Deb Reynolds, said: “It is exciting that we name the Tasmanian women’s squad today, further highlighting the growing talent across the state in female football.

“There will be a lot of competition amongst the squad members, who will strive for final selection to represent Tasmania against Queensland next month and against Sydney/Canberra in July.”

Both squads will come together for the first time on the week of May 20th 2024.
