AFL Queensland wishes to provide an update on community football practice matches and premier school football competitions scheduled for this weekend in Southeast Queensland.
Earlier this afternoon, the AFL announced that the 2025 Toyota AFL Premiership Opening Round fixtures at the Gabba and People First Stadium will be postponed this weekend. This announcement follows the Queensland Government’s update that Tropical Cyclone Alfred will hit the coast of Queensland near Brisbane either late Thursday or early Friday, bringing with it high winds, torrential rain, storm surges and potential flooding.
In line with this, we have made the early decision to cancel all community football practice matches across Southeast Queensland this weekend (Friday - Sunday), noting many clubs have begun to do so already. All premier schools competitions; CaSSSA, QGSSSA and AIC have also been cancelled.
With a large volume of youth and senior preseason fixtures and school football games scheduled between Friday and Sunday, the health and safety of clubs, players, officials and – importantly - the wider southeastern Queensland and northern New South Wales communities remains the priority.
AFL Queensland and its team is here to support community clubs in any way it can.
Everyone in the Queensland football community in the impacted regions are encouraged to follow Queensland Government and local council advice and to stay up-to-date with the latest warnings regarding Tropical Cyclone Alfred.
