In recognition of Women's Coaching Month, a group of dedicated female coaches from across NSW and the ACT were recently invited to an exclusive session with Sydney Swans Academy Coach, Kristie 'Twiggy' Whittard

This special event provided the coaches with unique insights into elite-level training and coaching techniques, aiming to enhance the development of women's football from grassroots to elite levels.

The day commenced with an up-close observation of a Sydney Swans Academy training session.

Twiggy expertly guided the coaches through the selection process of specific drills, shared strategies on effectively managing players' energy levels, and demonstrated innovative drills designed to improve in-game sense and awareness.

Following the practical session, the coaches were given a tour of the state-of-the-art facilities at Sydney Swans HQ.

Here, they experienced firsthand the professional environment available to Swans players at all levels, from the Academy through to elite AFL squads.

The coaches observed Academy students participating in their gym routines, gaining a better understanding of comprehensive athlete development.

Reflecting on the experience, Tara Moran, one of the attending coaches, praised Twiggy’s impactful leadership:

"Twiggy provided incredible access to the Academy program, explaining the purpose behind each drill and how feedback is effectively delivered.

Seeing her passion and dedication to educating and nurturing these young athletes was inspiring.

Her insights on development, game-day strategies, and coaching methods will greatly benefit our work at the grassroots level.

We’re already witnessing the positive impact of the Swans Academy as these young women return to community footy as coaches and umpires.

Twiggy’s contribution to growing female athletes and coaches is exceptional."

This Women's Coaching Month eexperience reinforced the importance of sharing knowledge and providing pathways for female coaches, empowering them to continue driving growth in women's football.
