School’s back! And so is the return of school footy with the Associated Independent Colleges (AIC) starting with matches this weekend ahead of their 10th year hosting an Australian rules football competition for their member schools.
AIC is the largest private school sporting organisation in Queensland, offering 16 sports for its eight member Colleges.
AFL Queensland’s Participation and Operations Manager, Kieran Daley, said the competition had continued to grow this year, providing more opportunities for students to participate.
“2026 will see more than 2,000 students participate in AIC football, which is a significant achievement and a fantastic outcome for school footy,” he said.
“Over the ten years of the competition, we have seen the skill, ability and passion grow and we can’t wait to see what’s in store this season.”
Ben Lowrie, 2026 President of the AIC also celebrated the return of the competition, not only for up and coming players but developing umpires too.
“The AIC is excited to be commencing Term 1 sport this weekend, with competition games and events occurring from Years 5 to 12 on a Friday night and Saturday morning,” said Lowrie.
“The continued development and success of AFL as one of these sports, will see over 2,000 students from across the AIC, participate and enjoy AFL in a well-supported and organised competition.”
Round One kicks off this Friday 6 February with the marquee match between St Laurence College and Villanova played at Giffin Park at 4.45pm.
