AFL Queensland is pleased to announce the coaching appointments for its 2026 QClash and AFL Open Inclusion and Wheelchair programs, with a strong group of experienced and passionate leaders set to guide athletes throughout the representative pathway.

In a unique alignment across both programs, the Brisbane Lions QClash coaches will also serve as Queensland's AFL Open head coaches, while the Gold Coast SUNS coaches will take on assistant coaching roles at the state level.

The appointments provide consistency for athletes progressing through the pathway, allowing coaches to work closely with players across both the QClash Series and AFL Open.

Wheelchair Program

Returning for a second consecutive year as Queensland AFL Open Wheelchair Head Coach, Marty Ryan will once again lead the state's wheelchair program after stepping into the role in 2025.

Ryan first became involved with the program as a coach developer before working closely with the state squad and eventually being elevated to head coach last year. His continued involvement reflects his commitment to developing Wheelchair AFL across Queensland.

Ryan will also coach the Brisbane Lions Wheelchair side in the 2026 QClash Series.

Joining him is Emily Otto, who returns as Gold Coast SUNS Wheelchair Head Coach and Queensland AFL Open Wheelchair Assistant Coach.

Otto brings extensive coaching experience, including involvement in QAFLW and U17 Talent coahcing, while also serving as Wheelchair AFL Open Assistant Coach in 2025.

The pair's reappointment provides valuable continuity for Queensland's wheelchair athletes, with both coaches returning for the 2026 season.

Inclusion Program

The Inclusion pathway will also see familiar faces leading the way, with Brett Evans appointed Queensland AFL Open Inclusion Head Coach and Brisbane Lions Inclusion Head Coach.

After serving as AFL Open Inclusion Assistant Coach for several years, Evans will step into the lead role in 2026, bringing a wealth of experience and a deep understanding of the program.

The Evans family has become synonymous with Inclusion football in Queensland, with Brett joined by wife Karen Evans, who supports the program in a wellbeing role, and son Dylan Evans, an eligible player who represented Queensland in 2025.

Supporting Evans at AFL Open level will be Todd Stephenson, who has been appointed Assistant Coach while also leading the Gold Coast SUNS Inclusion team during the QClash Series.

Stephenson currently coaches Redcliffe and brings significant enthusiasm and passion to the role as he begins his journey within Queensland's representative Inclusion pathway.

In addition this year, Queensland will enter a Women's Inclusion Team to the AFL Open. Express your interest in joining the team here.

Players will be selected from in-season matches and training sessions held throughout the year, with the QClash Series continuing to serve as an important stepping stone towards AFL Open selection.

Athletes interested in being considered for QClash or AFL Open selection are encouraged to participate in ongoing competitions and training opportunities throughout the season, with further information regarding upcoming sessions and selection processes to be released by AFL Queensland.
