For Sunshine Coast umpire Paul Jones, footy has become much more than a weekend role. It’s a family journey built on giving back, growth, and a shared love of the game.

Paul began umpiring six years ago at Maroochydore to support and mentor junior officials. What started as a way to contribute soon inspired his daughter Opal, who decided to pick up the whistle herself. Now 18, Opal has developed into a highly capable umpire, officiating senior men’s and women’s matches and national carnivals.

Beyond her own success, Opal’s biggest impact has been her leadership. Where there was once only one young female umpire locally, there are now around 20, thanks largely to her mentorship. She volunteers her time each week to coach and support the next generation, becoming a strong role model in the region.

Umpiring has also strengthened Paul and Opal’s bond, with long drives to games filled with reflection, advice, and shared experiences. A standout moment came when Opal officiated her first senior men’s reserves match alongside her father; a proud milestone for them both.

The family involvement continues with Paul’s son Huon, who has joined the umpiring ranks as a junior official. He regularly officiates Under 13 boys matches and Under 11 mixed games and, like his sister, shows remarkable confidence and a genuine love for umpiring. Huon has even given up playing football himself so he can fully dedicate his time to umpiring; a decision that speaks volumes about how much the role means to him.

As with any growing family obsession, umpiring has well and truly taken over the Jones household. Between Paul’s gear, Opal’s gear, and now Huon’s as well, umpire shirts, socks, and whistles seem to be everywhere - much to the amusement (and occasional confusion) of Paul’s wife, who is constantly trying to work out whose uniform belongs to who.

Some families bond over music, cooking, or camping. For the Jones family, it’s umpiring; a shared commitment that continues to create lasting memories, give back to the game, and inspire the next generation on and off the field.
