AFL Queensland has released Yeronga South Brisbane Football Club from their Bond University QAFLW licence.

Yeronga South Brisbane will play in the TPIL Lawyers QFAW Division 1 competition in 2026, with the club then eligible to apply for re-entry into the QAFLW competition as early as 2027.

This will allow Yeronga South Brisbane the opportunity to continue to develop their senior women’s program, including their young playing list and build upon the recent improvements they have made off field that will strengthen the club overall.

It will also provide time to ensure the club’s alignment with the QAFL/QAFLW Optimum Standards framework, ahead of a targeted return to the state’s premier women’s competition in 2027.

Head of AFL Queensland and International Trisha Squires said this decision was not made lightly.

“We remain committed to assisting Yeronga South Brisbane in the rebuild of their women’s program, with a focus on recruitment and sustainability,” she said.

“We acknowledge Yeronga South Brisbane’s proud history in our premier women’s competition and will continue working with them to make sure they are in the best possible position to return to the QAFLW as soon as 2027.”

Yeronga South Brisbane President John Robinson said the club is disappointed not to compete in the QAFLW competition in 2026, however is confident this move will set the senior women's program up for long-term success.

“Our priority is ensuring our women’s program is strong, sustainable and set up to thrive for years to come,” he said.

“This decision gives us the space to invest in our talented young players, build our list and put the right structures in place.

“We’re committed to working closely with AFL Queensland and fully intend to return to the QAFLW in 2027.”
