This past weekend, the men’s and women’s teams from Tasmania’s senior state academy took on Queensland at Latrobe Football Ground.
The women’s match took place first and the visitors started well, kicking 2.4 to a lone Tasmania major in the first term.
In the second quarter, Tasmania cut back the margin to three points at the half after putting 2.2 on the board for the term while restricting Queensland to 1.1.
However, Queensland steadied after the main break and despite some inaccuracy extended to a 27-point lead at three-quarter-time.
Ultimately, Queensland cruised to a 8.15 (63) to 3.3 (21) victory over Tasmania.
Queensland’s Tayla Gregory was deemed best afield for the victors, while Tasmania’s Libby Haines took home the medal as best-on-ground for the home side.
The men’s game took place directly afterwards, and Queensland got off to a superb start with 6.6 to Tasmania’s 1.1 in the opening quarter.
Queensland remained in control throughout the second term and went on to lead by 42 points at half-time.
Tasmania won the third term after kicking four of the seven goals registered, however a sizable gap still remained between them and Queensland.
In the end Queensland were too strong, running out 15.15 (105) to 10.7 (67) winners over Tasmania.
Cam Ellis-Yolmen was awarded the medal as the best player on the ground for Queensland, while Tasmania captain Brad Cox-Goodyer was judged best afield for his team.
