Injury Management

The AFL expects that Australian Football, at all levels, is played in a safe environment. To assist in the prevention of, and prompt attention to, injuries in Australian Football, it is important that adequate and timely first aid is delivered.

AFL FIRST AID PROVIDERS & MEDICAL STANDARDS

AFL First Aid Providers deliver immediate care for injuries or medical issues that arise during play and training. Their priority is the health and safety of the Players, and their role deserves the full support and respect of everyone involved.

To support player safety and welfare, the following must be in place at all matches and training sessions:

  • At least one AFL First Aid Provider with appropriate minimum qualifications in attendance
  • A first aid kit and adequate sport-specific rescue/transport equipment (e.g. stretcher)
  • Clearly marked venue access for emergency vehicles

AED’s

The AFL strongly recommends that every club has access to an automated external defibrillator (AED) at all matches and training sessions.

AEDs are portable, fully automated devices that can treat sudden cardiac arrest by analysing heart rhythm and delivering a shock if needed. They’re safe to use and won’t activate unless required—so there’s no risk of harm.

Early use of an AED offers the best chance of survival. Each club should nominate a responsible person to ensure the AED is clearly marked and that all relevant staff know its location.
