Rookie Me Connect is a dedicated sports communication platform designed to provide umpires and their families with easy access to updates, resources, communication and learning tools in one secure, child-safe environment.

We host regular online training sessions to complement our on-field training program, providing umpires with flexible opportunities to continue their development. These sessions allow umpires to build knowledge, review key concepts and stay connected, regardless of location or availability.

Our mentoring program provides umpires with ongoing support, guidance and feedback throughout the season. Experienced umpire coaches and mentors work closely with umpires at training and on game day to build confidence, enhance decision-making and support individual development at every stage of the umpiring pathway.

Umpiring Pathway

Junior

Junior Umpiring in Queensland is Club-based – Umpires will officiate Junior (U8-U11 Girls) matches at their local Club as a safe and accessible way to start their journey! Find out more here

 

Youth

Youth Field Umpiring begins at U11 Mixed and goes up to U17 Boys & Girls – this level is where Umpires join AFL Queensland and officiate in the SEQJ Competition. Click here for a link to resources and competition specific rules.

Senior

Senior Umpiring involves officiating as a Field, Boundary or Goal Umpire in the Queensland Football Association (QFA) competitions, which span across Sunshine Coast, Brisbane and the Gold Coast. These competitions host Men’s and Women’s matches from Division 1 to Division 3.

 

State League

State League Umpires officiate in the Queensland Australian Football League (QAFL) competition as Field, Boundary and Goal Umpires. This spans across QAFL Colts, Reserves & Seniors, alongside QAFL Women’s & Women’s Reserves.

AFL

The AFL is the premier Men’s elite competition – Queensland is currently represented by 4 Field, 6 Boundary & 3 Goal Umpires.

AFLW

The AFLW is the premier Women’s elite competition – Queensland in 2025 was represented by 5 Field, 6 Boundary & 3 Goal Umpires.

VFL

Queensland Umpires are represented in the Victorian Football League (VFL) program, where Brisbane Lions, Gold Coast Suns and Southport Sharks compete. This level sits above QAFL and is a stepping stone to the AFL and AFLW programs.

 

Umpires in Queensland officiate across several school competitions – including Schools of Excellence and StreetSmarts AFLQ Schools Cup. For more information, visit here

Talent Programs refer to Brisbane Lions & Gold Coast Suns Academy matches, alongside Coates League and any other opportunities to officiate as a Field, Boundary & Goal Umpire in a National or State Talent Program.

Regional Umpiring refers to officiating across Regional Queensland competitions which are based in Cairns, Townsville, Mackay, Capricornia, Wide Bay and Darling Downs. Opportunities to be part of a Regional Umpire Academy and travelling to officiate in School competitions are benefits of these programs.
