AFL Northern Territory (AFLNT) is pleased to confirm that Banks Football Club will join the TIO Northern Territory Football League (NTFL) Premier League competitions from the 2026/27 season.
Following a comprehensive application and assessment process, the AFLNT Board unanimously approved the proposal, which will see the Banks Football Club compete in both the Men’s and Women’s Premier League competitions.
Head of AFL Northern Territory, Sam Gibson, said Banks had demonstrated strong capability and alignment with the future direction of the competition.
“Banks Football Club has demonstrated a strong and considered approach through the application process,” Gibson said.
“Over recent seasons, the club has shown significant growth both on and off the field, including strengthened football programs, improved governance, and strong financial management.
“That sustained development gave AFLNT confidence in the club’s readiness to transition into Premier League competition and contribute positively to the future growth of the TIO NTFL.”
Discussions regarding the long-term structure of the Premier League competitions have occurred across several years and were revisited following the admission of PINT Football Club into the Men’s Premier League competition in 2022.
Following continued growth across the competition - including a 60% increase in participation since 2019 - the 2026/27 season presents the right opportunity to expand both Premier League competitions to 10 clubs.
The club’s application was assessed against established criteria covering governance, financial sustainability, football operations, junior pathways, and women’s football development. As part of the assessment process, AFLNT also reviewed the potential impact of the proposal on other clubs and competition more broadly. The consultation around this, as well as discussions with Banks, has informed a number of conditions that are designed to ensure the decision leads to sustainable competition growth, continued competitive balance, and positive long-term outcomes for all NTFL clubs.
As part of the club’s transition into the Premier League competitions, AFLNT and Banks Football Club have agreed on a number of key measures, including:
- The development of a clear junior and youth pathway framework within the club;
- Continued investment and resourcing of the club’s Women’s Premier League program;
- Contribution to a co-tenancy arrangement at the Gardens Oval precinct; and
- Support for competition integrity measures relating to player movement and competitive balance across the league
Banks Football Club President, Trent Fowler said the club was proud to take the next step in its history.

The promotion marks a historic milestone for a club that began from humble beginnings in 1978 and has grown into one of the Northern Territory’s proud community football clubs.
More than four decades later, the Bulldogs’ elevation reflects the contribution of generations of volunteers, players, members, and supporters who have helped build the club on and off the field.
